Disrupting immune regulation incurs transient costs in male reproductive function.
2014
9 pages; International audience; BACKGROUND: Immune protection against pathogenic organisms has been shown to incur costs. Previous studies investigating the cost of immunity have mostly focused on the metabolic requirements of immune maintenance and activation. In addition to these metabolic costs, the immune system can induce damage to the host if the immune response is mis-targeted or over-expressed. Given its non-specific nature, an over-expressed inflammatory response is often associated with substantial damage for the host. Here, we investigated the cost of an over-expressed inflammatory response in the reproductive function of male mice. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We experimenta…

Water temperature influences growth and gonad differentiation in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L. 1758)
2016
The effect of rearing temperature on gonad differentiation and growth was evaluated in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). One control group (CG, n = 60) and two experimental groups (EG1, n = 30; EG2, n = 30) were selected. CG was reared at 15.0 °C during 10 days post-hatch (dph) and at 19.0 °C throughout the remaining larval and post-larval development. EG1 was exposed to 14.5 °C from 1 to 50 dph, followed by an increase to 20 °C until sampling (176 dph). EG2 was exposed to 14.5 °C from 1 to 37 dph, followed by an increase to 20 °C until sampling (226 dph); 30 fish from CG were randomly sampled at 176 dph (CG1, control for EG1) and 30 fish were sampled at 226 dph (CG2, control for EG2). Weigh…
The murine nuclear orphan receptor GCNF is expressed in the XY body of primary spermatocytes
1998
AbstractWe have studied the expression of the nuclear orphan receptor GCNF (germ cell nuclear factor) on the mRNA and protein level in pubertal and adult mouse testes. We show by Northern and Western blot analyses and by in situ hybridization that GCNF is expressed in spermatocytes and round spermatids of adult mouse testis suggesting that GCNF may be a transcriptional regulator of spermatogenesis. Since the GCNF protein is accumulated in the XY body of late pachytene spermatocytes, it may be involved in transcriptional inactivation of sex chromosomes.
Laparoscopic removal of mullerian duct remnants in boys
2003
Abstract: Purpose: Mullerian duct remnants (MDRs) are present in a male pseudohermaphroditic form characterized by failure of the mullerian duct to regress due to insufficient production or peripheral action of mullerian inhibiting substance. The MDR can be asymptomatic but it often results in infections, stones and voiding troubles. Furthermore, it may develop into a neoplasm. Therefore, surgery is mandatory for large MDRs and symptomatic patients. Laparoscopic removal is described. Materials and Methods: Six males were treated from February 1998 to February 2003. Age at surgery was between 3 and 18 years (mean 8.6). All patients showed severe hypospadias and 2 had mixed gonadal dysgenesis…

Testis asymmetry in birds: the influences of sexual and natural selection
2014
Gonad size and shape asymmetries are particularly common in birds. Although some obvious size and shape differences between the left and right testes in birds were first documented more than a century ago, little is known about what influences the variation across species in either the degree or the direction of these asymmetries. Here we show that a left bias in size is the most likely ancestral state in most orders and families, and that there is a weak but significant negative relation between the degree of size and shape asymmetries. In extant species, testis size and shape symmetries increase with the degree of sperm competition (relative testes mass), but those relations are significa…
SPLENOGONADAL FUSION: A Genetic disorder? Report of a Case and Review of the Literature
2014
Splenogonadal fusion is a rare congenital anomaly in which there is fusion between the spleen and gonad, epididymis or vas. We treated a patient with scrotal mass. A discontinuous fusion between the spleen and epididymis was found: after frozen section mass was excised sparing testis. Although rare, the splenogonadal fusion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of scrotal masses in children, and orchiectomy should be avoided. Moreover, examination of siblings showed a brother affected from accessory spleen. This finding, not reported previously to our knowledge, suggests a possible familiarity of this disorder.
Management of undescended testes: European Association of Urology/European Society for Paediatric Urology Guidelines.
2016
Summary Context Undescended testis is the most common endocrinological disease in the male newborn period. Incidence varies between 1.0% and 4.6% in full-term neonates, with rates as high as 45% in preterm neonates. Failure or delay of treatment can result in reduced fertility and/or increased testicular cancer risk in adulthood. Objective To provide recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of boys with undescended testes which reduce the risk of impaired fertility and testicular cancer in adulthood. Evidence acquisition Embase and Pubmed were searched for all relevant publications, from 1990 to 2015 limited to English language. Data were narratively synthesized in light of methodolo…
Tunica vaginalis Free Grafts for Closure of Urethrocutaneous Fistulas
1990
In 32 patients a tunica vaginalis free graft was used for closure of urethrocutaneous fistulas (n = 26) or complicated hypospadias repair (n = 6). All patients had at least one operation (average 3.9) for urethral reconstruction prior to this procedure. 12 patients had recurrent fistulas (average 2.2). The technique proved to be very successful. Only 2 patients had to undergo subsequent reoperation for recurrent fistulas. The use of a free tunica vaginalis graft interposed between skin and urethra is our method of choice in the repair of recurrent or complicated urethrocutaneous fistulas.
